The Mexico nearshoring movement has emerged as a catalyst for significant developments in the US import and shipping economy. In a historic shift, Mexico has surpassed China for the first time to become the leading exporter to the US in 2023 and beyond.
Mexico's commitment to enhancing trade facilitation has made it easier and cheaper to import goods into the US. The streamlining of customs procedures, reduced tariffs, and improved regulatory harmonization have lowered barriers to trade, providing a more efficient and cost-effective import process for businesses operating across the border. This favorable trade environment incentivizes US companies to capitalize on Mexico's manufacturing capabilities, further fueling the growth of the US import and shipping economy.
The Mexico nearshoring movement, characterized by companies relocating manufacturing operations closer to consumer markets, has further intensified the momentum. This transformative shift has not only solidified Mexico's position in global trade but has also fueled heightened activity within key US shipping markets such as Laredo, Texas, and Tucson, Arizona.
Bilateral trade between Mexico and the US amounted to [$263 billion](https://www.dallasfed.org/research/economics/2023/0711) from January to April 2023, underscoring the growing importance of the relationship between the two countries. Notably, Mexican exports to the US recorded an increase of 4.6% year-on-year, while Chinese exports experienced a [sharp decline of 20%](https://www.ie.edu/insights/articles/the-united-states-buys-more-from-mexico-than-from-chinaat-last/#:~:text=Data%20released%20last%20week%20from,putting%20Mexico%20in%20first%20place.)compared to 2022.
