CARM Release 1 is live: here’s what you need to do

CARM went live on May 25, 2021 with the program’s first release.

You’ve probably read about CARM over the past few months. Now that it’s live, you can interact with the portal—and work through the steps to prepare yourself and your business for CARM’s second (and full) release of functionality next spring.

CARM is live...what now?CARM_MondayBlog_3

Step 1: Plan your delegation of authority

Planning the delegation of authority--determining who and what level of access and visibility on CARM’s portal--should be done both:

  • Internally with your staff, and
  • With your customs broker and any other third parties who may require access to your business via CARM’s portal.

Take some time to familiarize yourself with CARM terminology and how they define roles within the portal. Read more about delegating authority to internal employees and third parties like your Customs broker.

Step 2: Secure a surety bond or other financial security

There are several key changes to what may be your usual operations as an importer. One of these changes is that you can no longer rely on your Customs broker’s financial security for release prior to payment (RPP).

You’ll need to provide your own financial security through either a surety bond or a cash deposit.

Step 3: Register yourself and your business

The launch of the CCP has presented some program challenges, which CBSA is currently working to resolve. As a result, our recommendation is to wait until mid-July 2021 to register on the CCP (CARM Client Portal). However, our CARM Department is here to assist at any time. We are here to help.

Cole is prepared for the transition to the new CARM landscape. Read through our dedicated CARM web pages.
