The United States has revised the scope of its 50% Section 338 tariffs on Canadian goods, adding some products and removing others from the additional duties effective September 15, 2026. Two presidential proclamations issued September 8 set out the changes, relating to earlier U.S. actions on [Canadian motor vehicles](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/09/modifying-the-scope-of-products-of-canada-subject-to-the-additional-duties-imposed-to-offset-canadian-discrimination-against-the-united-states-with-respect-to-motor-vehicles/) and [alcoholic beverages](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/09/modifying-the-scope-of-products-of-canada-subject-to-the-additional-duties-imposed-to-offset-canadian-discrimination-against-the-commerce-of-the-united-states-with-respect-to-alcoholic-beverages/). Effective September 15, the revised tariffs apply to goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 a.m. ET. The modified 50% Section 338 [duties can ⁠stack](https://blog.coleintl.com/import-foundations/import-charges-on-canadian-imports-and-how-they-stack) with Section 232 duties, with the proclamations stating that the Section 338 duties, which took effect August 22 following a ⁠[three-day suspension](https://blog.coleintl.com/tradenews/us-pauses-50-percent-tariffs-on-canadian-goods-for-three-days), apply in addition to duties imposed under Section 232. Separately, [the White House announced import bans on specified Canadian goods](https://blog.coleintl.com/tradenews/the-white-house-announces-us-import-bans-on-certain-canadian-goods) that will take effect September 29, 2026. ## **What products are being added to the Section 338 tariffs?** The revised lists extend the 50% tariff to a range of additional Canadian products. Under the ⁠[motor vehicle-related product list](https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/ANNEX-I-AUTO.pdf), additions include certain: The ⁠[alcohol-related product list](https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Alcohol-Scope-Modification-Annex-I.pdf) separately adds numerous cheeses, certain fats and oils, hides, leather and furskins, and motorboats. The exact tariff treatment depends on the applicable [HTSUS](https://blog.coleintl.com/import-foundations/how-to-find-your-hts-code-when-importing-into-the-us) classification. ## **Which products are being removed?** The motor vehicle-related list removes the 50% tariff from eight tariff classifications, including certain salt, Portland cement, chemically pure sugars, refined lead, household paper products, switchgear, and fishing rod parts and accessories.
