As the partnership’s initiatives take shape in February 2025, Canadian businesses can expect faster, more reliable, and environmentally responsible shipping solutions.

In its efforts to improve Canadian cargo operations, DP World has announced its partnership with Gemini Cooperation—a newly formed collaboration between Maersk A/S and Hapag-Lloyd AG.

This strategic partnership aims to increase Canadian supply chain resilience, facilitate trade between Asia, Europe, and North America, and deliver more predictable and efficient services to shippers.

As part of this collaboration, DP World will roll out new container services at its terminals in Vancouver, Prince Rupert, and Saint John starting in February 2025. The new services will be supported by infrastructure upgrades and innovative logistics solutions.

“This partnership with Gemini Cooperation reaffirms our vision of enabling smarter trade and bolstering the resilience of global supply chains,” said Doug Smith, CEO of DP World in Canada.

“By uniting the strengths of DP World’s Canadian terminal network with the innovative approach of Gemini Cooperation, we are paving the way for seamless and reliable connections between Asia, Europe, and North America.”

Addressing supply chain challenges across Canada's ports

The DP World-Gemini Cooperation partnership will address key supply chain challenges to improve the reliability of Canadian cargo operations.

It will accommodate the growing needs of Canadian exporters and importers while improving the efficiency of port operations.

Moreover, the collaboration will improve supply chain resilience and reduce disruptions by introducing flexible options for cargo loading and discharge at Vancouver, Prince Rupert, and Saint John.

Prince Rupert, North America’s closest port to Asia, will play a central role in transpacific trade. Its strategic location, combined with advanced rail connectivity and uncongested infrastructure, makes it the fastest service point from the Asia-Pacific region.

Vancouver will focus on handling high-volume trade routes to and from Asia, while Saint John will manage vital shipping connections with Northern Europe.

The Gemini Cooperation aims to achieve 90% on-time vessel arrivals across these Canadian port terminals, which will help secure predictable schedules and reduce delays for shippers.

With this partnership and its strategic initiatives, greater consistency and reliability in cargo movements will benefit Canadian businesses by allowing them to better plan and optimize their supply chains.

This focus on predictable operations and dependable service will also help strengthen Canada’s position as a reliable hub for global trade.

Driving growth through innovation and infrastructure investments

DP World’s continued investments in Canadian port infrastructure further solidify the foundation for this partnership.

The recent addition of two new cranes at the Port of Saint John has significantly increased container handling capacity and operational efficiency.

Meanwhile, in Vancouver, terminal expansions have improved the ability to process growing trade volumes to relieve bottlenecks and reduce turnaround times.

Beyond infrastructure, the partnership emphasizes innovation and sustainability.

DP World and Gemini Cooperation are collaborating to create a smarter, more interconnected logistics network that uses advanced technologies such as AI-powered systems and real-time data analytics. These advancements will strengthen transparency, improve stakeholder coordination, and simplify workflows across Canadian cargo operations.

Sustainability is another cornerstone of this collaboration. The partnership supports Canada’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 by integrating renewable energy sources, electrifying equipment, and incorporating eco-friendly design principles into infrastructure projects.
