The expanded Canada–Côte d’Ivoire air transport agreement will support greater air freight connectivity between the two countries.

At a glance

    • Airlines from each country can operate up to 10 dedicated all-cargo flights per week.

    • Cargo airlines gain fifth-freedom rights at points in Africa, the EU, the UK, and the U.S.

    • Bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Côte d’Ivoire reached $1.2 billion in 2025.

The Canada–Côte d’Ivoire air transport agreement has been expanded to allow additional cargo and passenger flights, creating opportunities for increased air freight connectivity between the two countries.

Transport Canada announced the expanded agreement, which gives airlines additional operating rights and greater flexibility to serve international markets.

Canada has air transport agreements or arrangements with over 125 countries.

What changes under the expanded agreement?

The Canada–Côte d’Ivoire agreement allows airlines from each country to operate:

    • Up to 10 dedicated all-cargo flights per week

    • Up to 14 passenger-combination flights per week

    • Services to all destinations within either country

    • All-cargo flights using fifth-freedom rights at points in Africa, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States

Fifth-freedom rights allow an airline to carry cargo between two foreign countries as part of a service that begins or ends in its home country.

These rights provide airlines with greater flexibility to develop cargo routes and connect shipments through international markets.

What does this mean for Canadian importers?

For Canadian importers, the expanded agreement could provide more freight options for moving time-sensitive goods from Côte d’Ivoire to Canada.

The additional routing flexibility could also give importers more options when planning international shipments and help support more flexible supply chains.

Canada–Côte d’Ivoire trade continues to grow

Bilateral merchandise trade between Canada and Côte d’Ivoire reached $1.2 billion in 2025, and Côte d’Ivoire is Canada’s fourth-largest bilateral trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa.

Canadian exports to Côte d’Ivoire have also grown 32% over the past year.
