The Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement
February 2017 update
We published an article about this agreement between Canada and the European Union back in November, shortly after it was signed. See our previous blog on CETA for a refresher.
The latest development is that, as anticipated, the European Parliament has now approved the deal. Roughly 58 per cent of the members of the European Parliament voted in favour of ratification, setting the stage for provisional application of nearly 90 per cent of the agreement later this spring.
Some analysts see this as an opportunity to raise awareness among Canadian businesses about the potential for more trade and investment in Europe.
Currently, only about 40,000 of Canada’s one million small- and medium-sized businesses are exporters and just 10,000 of them export outside the U.S.
